Haven Street railway station opened in 1875 〔"Isle Of Wight Railways, Then and Now", Pomeroy, C,A: Oxford,Past & Present Publishing, 1993, ISBN 0-947971-62-9〕 and was an intermediate stop on (successively) the Ryde and Newport Railway, Isle of Wight Central Railway, Southern Railway 〔(Southern E-group web-site )〕 and British Rail-being renamed Havenstreet in 1958.〔(Subterranea Britanica )〕 It closed on 21 February 1966〔"Steaming Through the Isle Of Wight", Hay,P : Midhurst,Middleton, 1988 ISBN 0-906520-56-8〕 but re-opened as the headquarters of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway in 1971. Developments since re-opening have included the construction of a locomotive works, carriage and wagon repair works, additional sidings and a café.
